Don’t Overthink It

People ask writers: How do you work? What is your process? And how much do you plot? While packing for a move, I found these eight cue cards plotting my next novel, The Blondes, which is just about to enter editing for publication in 2012. You can see the handwriting isn’t mine; I was dictating frantically and on my behalf Brian was quickly noting in his brutish male script. I remember I had tried a different, more complex run at this before arriving at these eight cards — but these are the plot points that won and enabled me to write the novel.

Bonus: There is a ninth card, which is the first note I made for Men Walking on Water, a project I’m just beginning. Out of four lines, only three are still relevant.
